What Is A Micro-Adventure?

I have a series on my travel channel where I go on micro-adventures in between big trips. Here’s my explanation of what it means to go on a micro-adventure.

micro-adventure (n) - An adventure that takes place close to home. It typically involves exploring your own city and neighborhood, and/or nearby locations.

I have the good fortune of living in a pretty diverse city (Los Angeles). I often get people who tell me that it isn’t fair and that they couldn’t possibly do anything fun or exciting where they live. This simply is not true. Every town has a history.  If you really can’t find something to do in your city, then travel an hour north, west, east, or south and I guarantee you will find a place worth exploring.

Finding the spirit of adventure can be a challenge at first. Work gets in the way. Money. Friends. Family. Location. So many things can feel like obstacles. I’m going to let you in on a little secret… they aren’t really obstacles.

Maybe you aren’t ready to take a big trip abroad and spend a couple weeks in an unknown country, but that doesn’t mean you can’t explore close to home. That still counts! Some of the coolest adventures I’ve had have been right in my own neighborhood.

Recently I decided to try biking in Santa Monica. For $8 I was able to rent a cool trike bike (I looked so fly) and ride around Santa Monica all the way to Venice Beach and back! It was such a nice way to spend the day. It was only 45 minutes away from my house and $8.

Riding the bikes meant so much more than just riding a bike. It meant going out into the world and doing something I've never done before. I experienced something new and met people I never would have met if I had stayed at home. What seems like an every day thing, might be something unique and exciting for someone else. Taking the initiative to get out there and try those things regardless of where you are in the world... that is the essence of a micro-adventure.

If something inside of you is asking you to explore, then just do it. Get in the car and drive. You’ll be surprised with what you find.

Got time to spare? Here's a playlist of my micro-adventures!
